Lekay opens up about his goal and objectives

WAYDE Lekay is now over his penalty miss against Kaizer Chiefs and is firmly focused on achieving his target of bagging in goals for TS Galaxy Football Club in the DSTV Premiership.

The diminutive striker is the man on the mission. Against AmaZulu at the start of the season, Lekay netted the winner for the Rockets.

Ahead of our match against Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium at 8.15pm on Saturday, Lekay sat down with TS Galaxy website and opened up about his big dreams in the elite league.

TS Galaxy (TSG): How did the Fifa break treat you guys?
Wayde Lekay (WL): We’ve been working hard at training. We’ve been working on some of the things that didn’t go well against Chiefs. We’ve been struggling in terms of scoring goals. During this break, we were working on those. The boys are working hard. We are ready for Swallows.

TSG: Tell us about the importance of keeping the unbeaten record.
WL: The fact that we are still unbeaten brings confidence in to the team. Our aim is to pick up points against Swallows. It helps a lot knowing that we haven’t lost.

TSG: Wayde, you always brimming with confidence, tell us about that.
WL: You have to know what you are worthy. You have to know what you can do.  It is something that the coach always emphasizes. He always says that the biggest challenge is fear. If we are going to fear and then we won’t succeed. For us to have those characteristics, I believe we can take on anything. It is pointless coming in to the league with fear. It is eleven versus eleven in the field of play. That’s what we are here for.  We have to know that we can go and win. Confidence is key.

TSG: How did you handle the setback of missing a penalty in our previous encounter against Chiefs?
WL: Obviously during the game, it is a disappointing moment but many players miss penalties. It is something that happens in football. You have to accept it. Yes, it does take a knock on your confidence but if you allow it to get the better of you and then you won’t succeed. I’m back on training and working very hard. That’s the most important thing.

TSG: Surely that has built your character.  WL: It is definitely going to make me stronger. Obviously facing that moment against Chiefs. It was a reality check for me. You have to gain confidence from that. That is going to build my character. It will make me stronger.

TSG: What are your goals and objectives?
WL: I get this question a lot of times. I want to at least score 20 goals. That is always my target. Strikers in Europe are reaching the target of 30 goals. But for me, it is more about the team. I want the team to succeed. I want the team to do well. We are not here to add numbers. In each and every game, we can challenge as much as we can. If I can score as much goals as I can to help the team get better, that is great. That’s what I want to do.

TSG: How does it feel to leave your dream of plying your trade in top flight football?
WL: It is a big moment. It is a big opportunity. That’s why I came in to the club. That’s why I want to come here and do the best that I can. I want to have a great season. Every child want to play in top flight football. It comes with a lot of challenges. Hard work starts now. It is not easy to get there but it is even harder to get to play there. For me, it is about having a great season. I want to learn as much as I can.

TSG: Who did you look up too when you were growing up?
WL: Obviously growing up, Benni McCarthy was my favorite. I watched him on television playing in England. I watched him playing in South Africa. He is probably one of my biggest idols. I want to follow on those footsteps.

TSG: We are playing Swallows this coming weekend. What can we expect?
WL: It is going to be an exciting encounter. We are both coming from GladAfrica Championship. They have added numbers in to their squad. I think, we also have an amazing squad. It will be a good battle. It will be an exciting encounter for the fans especially. They have done well and we also haven’t lost. It is a definitely a game to watch.
