Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane is one of the most decorated footballers under the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era.
Everywhere he has been, Yeye has strolled to victory. He is synonymous with silverwares and success in his football career.
At the age of 38, he is still going strong in the colours of TS Galaxy FC. We sat down with him to chat about his sparkling career, Fifa break and his future aspirations.
TS Galaxy (TSG): The club has enjoyed a decent start in to the new season, what is going to be key in keeping the consistency?
RL: It is a positive start for the team. We’ve collected five points out of possible nine. It is a morale booster for us that we haven’t lost a game. The most important thing for us during this break, it is to keep working hard and fix our mistakes. We are facing two weeks without playing an official game. It doesn’t mean that we as players we have to relax. We have a job at hand.
TSG: You’ve been in these situations so many times in your career where you had to keep going without any competitive action because of the Fifa break. What is going to be the key in dealing with this situation?
RL: These situations are more mentally than physically. If you don’t have anything to train for, usually your minds turn to relax but we need to learn that even if there are no games for the next week or two, we still need to concentrate and focus. We have to keep doing the right things. We have to keep doing things that will make us better.
TSG: How far do you think, we can go in the league?
RL: We can go as far as (number) one in the league. It is going to be a huge challenge but if we put our mind in to something, keep working hard and stay humble and don’t tell ourselves that we’ve arrived, we will qualify for top eight and go as far as we can.
TSG: You’ve won silverwares with Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United and almost won one with Highlands Park last season but succumbed to a defeat at the expense of SuperSport in the MTN8 final last season, what is your secret with trophies?
RL: I don’t join teams to add numbers. For me, it is always about competing. It is about the chance of competing for every trophy that is available. I want to do the same thing here at TS Galaxy. I want to compete for every trophy that is avaliable and if it is possible, win it as well.
TSG: You rose to prominence back in 2002 but you are still going strong in 2020. What has kept you going for so many years in the elite league?
RL: I don’t think, it is a secret. For me, it is about the love for the game. It is all about the passion that I have for my job. My body stills allows me to keep going. It is not a secret but it is about the passion, drive and love. The body allows me to do whatever that I want to do.
– You never said you are retiring but for some reason murmurs were rife that you were about to call it a quit. Can we clarify that for our supporters?
RL: I’ve never said, I’m retiring. If I’m retiring, it will be clear that I’m calling it a quit. I can’t say I’m retiring and then post Highlands Park jersey alone out of all the teams that I’ve played for. I’ve played for Jomo Cosmos, Kaizer Chiefs and and SuperSport United previously. I didn’t have a length stay at Highlands Park. Why would I retire and then post the only jersey of the team where I had a shortest stay? It doesn’t make sense but obviously someone didn’t do his job properly in the media space. They decided to write what they wanted to write. Maybe those people knew that it will attract more people to their publication. In short, I didn’t say I was retiring but I said, I’m closing the chapter of Highlands Park. My contract at that time had ended. I was moving to another journey and challenge.
TSG: Your message to Bafana Bafana as they are busy preparing for Sao Tome and Principle?
RL: To all our national team players, not only Bafana Bafana players but to Banyana Banyana and Under-23 players, they are all representing us. We are fully behind them because they are representing us. They must just go there work hard and have funny and enjoy the challenge that comes with representing the country. They have our support.
TSG: Thank you Yeye.
RL: It is my pleasure.
