26 August 2020 – TS Galaxy FC went down by a narrow 1-0 margin in a closely contested GladAfrica Championship clash at the Wits Rugby Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Rockets started off the match with some good touches in their build up but could not make it count in the final third when it mattered the most in the early stages.
A good opportunity in the 14th minute by the skilful Khayelihle Shozi almost resulted in a clear goalscoring opportunity but the nippy winger was judged offside.
Shozi was back in the picture again, this time with good combination play with Sihle Nduli resulting in a threaded ball for Koketso Modise who failed to control.
It was however Stars who found the opener in the 30th minute from Mpho Khabane who converted a header from close range after being found by a cross in the box unmarked to make it 1-0 for his side.
Coach Mabhuti Khenyeza brought in some fresh legs and the experienced Thabo Nthethe to stabilise things at the back and allow the team to have more numbers going forward. A strategy that almost worked in the Rockets’ favour as more chances were created.
Substitute, Sbongeleni Gamede almost levelled matters in the 69th minute with a well struck grass cutting shot which was saved by the keeper. Thobani Kunene, who also came in as a substitute was unlucky not to find the equaliser after doing well to get in front of his defender from a long ball to unleash a powerful volley that was parried to safety by the keeper.
The Rockets continued surging forward but it was not enough as the three points headed the way of Stars.
Galaxy will be looking at completing the season on a high when they face Uthongathi in the very last fixture of the GladAfrica Championship on Sunday afternoon at the UJ Soweto Campus.
