31 October 2019 – Cape Town born midfielder Aphiwe Maliwa is looking at emulating Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search alumni such as Bafana Bafana international Maphosa Modiba.
The Gugulethu-born midfielder is currently on trial at reigning Nedbank Cup champions TS Galaxy after being drafted into the team alongside his Ke Yona Team Search teammate, Sello Basher as part of Nedbank’s efforts of affording aspiring footballers an opportunity to play professional football.
For Maliwa, Galaxy presents the perfect opportunity to unleash his full potential, as a club that is well known for giving youngsters an opportunity who did the unthinkable and shocked the nation with their impressive Nedbank Cup run, that saw them sink Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium in the finals.
Playing for TS Galaxy is such a great blessing. So many players want to be here, and I’m so happy to be one of the few. The Nedbank Ke Yona Team search has opened doors to a number of players and being part of a club as ambitious as TS Galaxy is an exciting opportunity that I am not taking lightly” said the 23-year-old.
On working with one of South Africa’s most respected coaches in Dan Malesela, the Gugulethu-born player said working with Malesela is helping him improve various aspects of his game.
“Coach Dan is more than just a coach to us. He is always sharing words of wisdom and pays careful attention to details when it comes to coaching. He has improved so many aspects of my game and this assists me in my growth as a footballer” concluded Maliwa who dreams of representing his country one day in national team colours.
Meanwhile, the team is hard at work ahead of their CAF Confederations Cup return leg against Nigeria’s Enyimba on Sunday, 3 November at the Mbombela Stadium.
The Rockets suffered a 2-0 defeat at home and will be hoping to put up a good performance on Sunday in what promises to be a tough encounter against the former African champions.
