Mfundo Phungwayo scored in stoppage time to snatch a 1 – 1 draw for TS Galaxy against Stellenbosch FC in a National First Division match at the rainy Kameelrivier Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Galaxy had the upper hand in the first half and could have gone ahead well before the halftime break, however as a result of often too many passes without shooting at goal, the home side could not capitalize on their dominance.
Galaxy could have broken the deadlock as early as the fourth minute when Phungwayo’s cross into the box from the right found Snethemba Ngidi who powered it over the crossbar.
Not taking the visitors attacks lying down Stellenbosch eventually found their rhythm before the half hour mark, and wasted no time launching their own attacks.
One of their most threatening attacks saw Terrence Mashego display brilliant defending efforts in the 22nd minute, when he to blocked Leletu Skelem’s shot from short range, which could have proven difficult to save for Galaxy goalkeeper Ludwe Mpakumpaku.
With the two sides still locked at 0 – 0 the match had to be paused due to heavy rain just after the hour mark, and resumed after a more than 20 minutes delay.
Stellenbosch broke the deadlock seven minutes after the resumption of play in the 67th minute, through Jarrod Maroole who lobbed the ball over Mpakumpaku.
After conceding and with time not on their side Galaxy played with more urgency, which eventually resulted in a stoppage time equalizer courtesy of Phungwayo’s strike from the edge of the box which deflected off Mogama De Goede into the back of the net.
Following the result Stellenbosch still top the table with 27 points from 13 games, while Galaxy also retain the 12th position with 14 points from the same number of games.
